Model replicates a C-130A at Thule AFB Greenland in the mid 1960s during Operation Firebird
Built for a friend who was the pilot
The 17th Tactical Air Support Group flew C-47s and C-53s in WWII and flew China/Burma as well as Operation Torch. The name Firebirds came from this group and in the 60s they were testing jet assist pacts on C-130s under Operation Firebird.
Mike VanLeeuwen entered a WW1 aircraft diorama and a car model at the Yavapai Fair in September and took TWO 2nd place ribbons! Great work and Congratulations Mike!
Mike is on the American Battlefield Monuments Commission. He served with the U.S. Park Service in Hawaii for 8 years as a guide at the U.S.S. Arizona Monument. Mike recently toured WW1 sites in France, Belgium, Italy and Serbia. Thanks for bringing this shovel to the meeting and letting all of us see it!
